Welcome in the Forest, here you can read some ideas and theories from me and my packmates.

Shifting patterns : a weird approach to shifting that may be easier for visual people.

These patterns represent an individual,

Green is the spirit
Yellow is the mind and actions
Red is the body

The left column represent humanity, and the right column is the animality
Note that the middle point may vary with individuals

------Normal patterns------
This is a normal human pattern: it shows that everything is in the human side.
This is a normal animal pattern: this time, it shows that everything is in the animal side. (nothing big yet.)

------Were patterns------
This is a non-shifted were pattern: it shows that the spirit is a combination of both.
It also shows that the mind and actions are usually not completely human.
This is a mentally shifted were pattern: it shows that the spirit remains the same and the mind and actions are a lot closer to the animal.

------Somewhat "Fictive" patterns------
This is an anthropomorphic pattern: anthropomorphic is basically the middle of both. (a middle or overall semi-shifted individual.)
This is a Physically shifted were pattern: it shows that the spirit remains the same, the were is mentally shifted and the body becomes totally animal.
Note that it is the same pattern as a non-shifted were but inverted.

------Further Explanations------

Like any manner of explaining this phenomenon, this one has many flaws. This is not proven, mainly because it is not provable. This is only my approach to make basic understanding of shifts easier.

The spirit is not fixed, it could be more animal or more human. Most of us feel more animal but our spirit can not really be all animal like. There must be some human characteristics, allowing us to fit in the society. The spirit is really hard to place on the scale cause I wanted to keep everything a 1 equivalent unit. If I had filled both giving it a 2 size equivalent unit, it would have given the idea that there is two part of the self. This is half true : we got animal and human characteristics but not separated one from the other.

The mind and actions was also hard to place on the scale. I did not make it go completely either way because of the human characteristics. Some can go more borderline and other change almost nothing.

The body is the easiest thing to understand I hope :).

Note that I tried to give a general idea which is exceptionally hard with this subject.
